Johnson spent his first ten seasons (1987-96) as an assistant coach in his hometown of Marshall, Illinois. During that time, Johnson served as linebackers coach and defensive coordinator under long-time Marshall Coach John Hasten. Johnson later joined the staff at Terre Haute South Vigo High School from 1997-99 as defensive coordinator.

Johnson returned to Marshall as defensive coordinator in 2000 and was promoted to head coach at Marshall High School in 2001. While at Marshall, Johnson compiled a career record of 52 wins and 14 losses, including a mark of 10-2 in 2007. During the 2008 season, Johnson led his team to an Illinois Class 3A Elite 8 finish, the third time in the history of the school that the Marshall football team advanced that far in the state playoffs.

Under Johnson's coaching career at Marshall, his program produced four different representatives as members of the Illinois East/West Shrine All-Star Game, as well as at least one All-Illinois football player in five of his six seasons. In addition, Marshall's football teams advanced past the first round of the Illinois Football Playoffs in five of the six seasons under Coach Johnson.

Over the past two years, Johnson has served on the Indiana State University football coaching staff as the Sycamores special teams' coordinator and linebackers' coach.

Johnson is a 1987 graduate of Indiana State University. Coach Johnson and his wife Cindy have two children. His daughter Ashley is a senior at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and son Travis is a freshman quarterback at Indiana State University.

Johnson's teaching position will be as the Alternative Education Room coordinator at Mattoon High School.
