Mattoon Welcomes New head Football Coach

Troy Johnson
Biography:
At the May 12, regular Board of Education
meeting, school officials recommended Mr. Troy Johnson as the new head
football coach at Mattoon High School.
A star linebacker from Indiana State from 1982-87, he played on Sycamore
football teams that advanced to the NCAA FCS Playoffs in both 1983 and
1984 under former head coach Dennis Raetz. While playing at ISU, Johnson
paced the team with 104 total tackles during the 1986 season. Johnson is a
member of the Indiana State University Athletics Hall of Fame as the 1984
football team was inducted in 2002. After graduation from ISU, he signed a
professional football contract with the New York Jets.

Johnson spent his first ten seasons (1987-96) as an assistant coach in his
hometown of Marshall, Illinois. During that time, Johnson served as
linebackers coach and defensive coordinator under long-time Marshall Coach
John Hasten. Johnson later joined the staff at Terre Haute South Vigo High
School from 1997-99 as defensive coordinator.
Johnson returned to Marshall as defensive coordinator in 2000 and was
promoted to head coach at Marshall High School in 2001. While at Marshall,
Johnson compiled a career record of 52 wins and 14 losses, including a
mark of 10-2 in 2007. During the 2008 season, Johnson led his team to an
Illinois Class 3A Elite 8 finish, the third time in the history of the
school that the Marshall football team advanced that far in the state
playoffs.
Under Johnson's coaching career at Marshall, his program produced four
different representatives as members of the Illinois East/West Shrine
All-Star Game, as well as at least one All-Illinois football player in
five of his six seasons. In addition, Marshall's football teams advanced
past the first round of the Illinois Football Playoffs in five of the six
seasons under Coach Johnson.
Over the past two years, Johnson has served on the Indiana State
University football coaching staff as the Sycamores special teams'
coordinator and linebackers' coach.
Johnson is a 1987 graduate of Indiana State University. Coach Johnson and
his wife Cindy have two children. His daughter Ashley is a senior at
Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and son Travis is a freshman quarterback at
Indiana State University.
Johnson's teaching position will be as the Alternative Education Room
coordinator at Mattoon High School.
